Immunization is one of the most effective ways to protect your child against serious, vaccine-preventable diseases. The Government of Nepal, in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO), maintains a comprehensive National Immunization Programme. At Padmashree Hospital in Pokhara, we supplement this program with advanced child care and neonatal support.
The Recommended Immunization Calendar in Nepal
Every newborn should receive timely vaccines to build active immunity. The standard calendar includes:
- At Birth: BCG (tuberculosis prevention) and Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) zero dose.
- 6 Weeks: Rotavirus (diarrhea), DPT-HepB-Hib (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Hemophilus Influenza), PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine), and OPV.
- 10 Weeks: Second doses of Rotavirus, DPT-HepB-Hib, PCV, and OPV.
- 14 Weeks: Third doses of DPT-HepB-Hib, OPV, and PCV, along with FIPV (Fractional Inactivated Polio Vaccine).
- 9 Months: Measles-Rubella (MR) first dose and Pneumococcal vaccine booster.
- 12 Months: Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine (critical in Nepal's sub-tropical belts).
- 15 Months: Measles-Rubella (MR) second dose.
Why Pediatric Checkups Matter During Immunization
Vaccination appointments are more than just receiving a needle. During your pediatric visit at Padmashree Hospital:
- Growth Monitoring: We measure height, weight, and head circumference to track development.
- Milestones Check: Our pediatricians assess motor skills, language acquisition, and social interaction.
- Allergy Screening: We screen for vaccine allergies or pre-existing clinical complications before administration.
- NICU Coordination: For premature infants, our pediatric critical care team coordinates closely with our 24/7 NICU.
Preparing Your Baby for Vaccination
- Dress your baby in loose, comfortable clothing.
- Stay calm during the injection; infants pick up on parental anxiety.
- Comfort your baby immediately after the injection with feeding or physical cuddling.
- Be prepared for mild fever or soreness at the injection site; our doctors will prescribe baby paracetamol drops with precise dosing instructions.
If your child's immunization schedule is delayed, or you have recently moved to Pokhara, Lekhnath, or surrounding Kaski regions, contact our pediatric department to schedule a catch-up immunization slot.
